Founder of Parsons and Sons Transportation

Richard Harvey Parsons
1917 - 1997

Richard Harvey Parsons was born, January 9th., 1917, in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Known simply as Dick to his friends, much of his youth was spent exploring the hub of the old city. As a small boy, he was facinated by machines and was drawn to the the old St. Johns Rail Yard, where he would watch the great shuttling steam engines of the Reid Newfoundland Railway.

As was the trend of the times, Richard left school at an early age, to go to work on the coastal boats as a cabin boy. Hard working and industrious, he applied himself to his work. In spite of having only a grade 3 education, Richard eventually became the Engineers Mate on board the legendary coastal boat S.S. Meigle. It was once said of him, "There is no machine you can take appart, that Dick Parsons can't put back together."

Between trips to sea, Richard met and married Annie Lena Morgan, January 23rd., 1939. Together, they had 1 daughter and 7 sons.

In 1952, Richard left the sea man's life behind, and opened a pub in Seal Cove, but his passion for machines was still strong. With confederation, and the push to build roads in Newfoundland, Richard purchased several dump trucks and put them to work on the Trans Canada Highway. Then in February, 1962, Richard purchased 3 used school buses, to provide transportation to the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Regional High School.

Besides his growing business, Richard was also an avid supporter of local sports, and instrumental in the formation of the C.B.S. Senior Hockey League. As Conception Bay South grew, so too did Parsons Transportation. In 1985, Parsons & Sons Transportation Limited was incorporated.

Richard's love of the business was evident in his involvement with it. Although he turned the operation of the company over to his sons, he still worked closely with them.

In February 1997, Richard Parsons was inducted into the Conception Bay South Sports Hall Of Fame as a builder.

Richard died suddenly, on May 23rd., 1997, while purchasing tires for a bus.

He is sorely missed.
